Mystery Knitalongs Explained: Why Knitters Love Them and How to Enjoy the Knitting Adventure

Mystery knitalongs (MKALs) pop up everywhere — on Ravelry, Instagram, and newsletters. But if you’ve never joined one, you might be wondering: What exactly is a mystery knitalong? And maybe more importantly: Should I dive in?

Let’s unravel the mystery together.

What is a mystery knitalong, anyway?

A knitalong (KAL) is when a group of knitters work on the same project at the same time, sharing progress, tips, and encouragement along the way. A mystery knitalong adds a twist: you don’t know what the finished project will look like until you knit it!

The designer releases the pattern in a series of “clues” over a few weeks. Each clue tells you exactly what to knit for one section of the project. As the weeks go by, the design unfolds, and knitters everywhere reveal their progress together, bit by bit.

Why join a mystery knitalong?

  • Community connection: While participants may be separated by long distances, the MKAL brings you together into a group, all working on the same project. Chat groups let you share pictures and celebrate each other’s progress as you get to know the other knitters.

  • Surprise and adventure: I can tell from the emails that I get in the lead-up to each clue’s release that knitters eagerly anticipate getting instructions for the next section of the project. Once the clue is released, knitters dive in and start enjoying each clue right away, even if they don’t have time to knit right then. It’s like unwrapping a present each time.

  • Skill building: Lots of knitters say that MKALs are the best way to learn new skills. Because the pattern is revealed step by step, you can focus on learning one thing at a time. And there is so much support during the MKAL that you will never feel adrift: The designer can answer questions right in the chat group, and other participants can provide advice and tips, too. There is usually extra support within the pattern, as well, with photo tutorials, tips, and step-by-step videos.

How to join a mystery knitalong:

You may see announcements of MKALs in newsletters or on social media. There is also a Ravelry group that maintains a calendar of MKALs. (link to group)

MKAL announcements usually include the dates clues will be released, yarn requirements, and limited information about the project - whether it’s a shawl, scarf, cowl, etc., and maybe hints about the knitting itself, like whether it will involve lace, stranded knitting, brioche, or other techniques.

Once you decide to join, you’ll be able to join the chat group and start choosing your yarn. Sometimes yarn kits are available, to give you extra confidence that your color combination will be a success. Lots of knitters prefer to work from stash yarn. It’s fun to see knitters’ yarn choices, even before the knitting begins!

As the MKAL progresses, you’ll automatically receive each clue as it’s released and have all the fun of discussing it and sharing pictures with your new knitting friends.

Tips for a great MKAL experience:

  • When considering joining a mystery knitalong, check previous MKALs from the designer to understand the likely vibe of the finished object; they often have a signature style (lace, texture, colorwork).

  • Swatch with your planned yarn ahead of time. You’ll feel more confident heading into the mystery.

  • Join the chat. Whether it’s a Ravelry group, Facebook page, or somewhere else, sharing the experience and celebrating each other’s progress are fun parts of a mystery knitalong that are not at all mysterious.

  • Enjoy the other knitters’ enthusiasm and support, but give yourself some grace - It’s okay if you don’t keep up with the clues. The pattern is yours forever, and you can choose to keep unraveling the mystery at your own pace.
